Hello! My name is Meghan. By day I am a Customer Service Subject Matter Expert for a top home security company. By night I wear many hats: wife, mom, organizer, chef, crafter, artist, singer and fashionista. I dabble in a bit of everything and like most moms; I am a great multi-tasker. I started VariegatedMeg after the birth of my son because I longed for an artistic outlet. I wanted a little corner of the internet that let me share my love of clothing as well as fiber arts, and every project in between.
I grew up in a small town in upstate NY called Horseheads. Although I consider my hometown to be small, in no way would I have called myself a country girl. Even in high school, I pushed myself to wear outrageous outfits and live outside the standards. High school was a wonderful time filled with lifelong friends and a blooming confidence. It is nice to be naïve.
I came to Pittsburgh to attend Point Park University. I was part of the performing arts department for 4 years and graduated with a BFA in Musical Theater. Although my experience was not what I expected, I left the program with exceptional life lessons and a clear view of reality. I still really love theater, music and the arts. I believe that the arts are imperative for humans to feel and grow and love.
These days I spend a lot of time being a mom to a brilliant little boy. Family has become the most important thing in life. In the eyes of my child, I am the world and that is a wonderful feeling.
Fashion has always resonated with me. Of course, growing up as, what’s the word? Big-boned, husky, thick, chunky, curvy? Yes. Growing up with a ‘normal’ body, I of course struggled with body image. Even with this ever so popular internal struggle, I really wanted to dress in funky and experimental looks that I saw in magazines. At the time, clothing options for a flamboyant, chubby girl in the country were not great and I did eventually turn to the thrift store and sewing machine to create outfits. I did and still do try to push my fashion boundaries because I believe it helps feed and cultivate my style.
I love antiques and learning about eras past. Most recently my love for all things vintage have translated over to my style. While I have always tried to tie in a retro or vintage vibe into my modern clothes, these days I’m really flourishing and growing my vintage inspired style. I’m glad to share my new fashion experiences and hope that I can offer some style and outfit inspiration.
I have always been artistic, whether it be with clay, paint, paper crafts, etc. You name it and I have done it. But, crochet has been the biggest art in my life. It is an obsession and a therapy and I practice it daily. The summer after 6th grade, I spent two weeks with my grandmother and she taught me crochet basics. I worked on a granny square blanket (that I never finished). I had no idea at the time, that she was passing on a trade to a new generation. I’m not sure that she realized what she had given me but I’m grateful to have learned from her. In turn, when she passed, I inherited her boxes of crochet items. These are some of my most dearest and cherished items.
I take great pride in my fiber art and I love to see others enjoy it as much as I do. I have always been a stickler to following a pattern. I have had many, many years of crochet experience and there is little that I cannot do with yarn and a hook. Most recently, I took a sort of ‘leap’ in advancing my fiber art and I started to experiment with pattern writing. Now there is much more to learn and experience in regards to designing crochet. I’m excited to have started this new journey and I’m happy to share these new patterns and experiences on VariegatedMeg.
